ABOUT THE WONDER PROJECT

Women have played a crucial role in the fight against fascism, recognizing it as a serious threat to world peace and actively contributing to the democratic transition. They have fought for justice, freedom and peace: their sacrifice, often forgotten in great historical reconstructions, remains an essential pillar of collective memory.

The project aims to explore and valorize the contribution of European women in the Resistance during the Second World War, highlighting their protagonism in the post-war democratic transition and promoting a strengthened awareness of the value of female participation in the consolidation of democracies and the protection of fundamental rights. For decades, women’s contributions to the Resistance have remained largely invisible at the historiographical and institutional levels, relegated to a secondary role compared to the male narrative of the Liberation Struggle. This approach has diminished the impact of women who performed vital tasks in the anti-fascist network, such as intelligence gathering, clandestine propaganda, liaison between groups, and logistical support. Even the institutional criteria for recognition and awarding have penalized female participation, adopting almost exclusively military parameters.

WONDER strives to give voice to this silenced resistance, recognizing and valorizing the contribution of women as leaders, fighters, organizers, messengers and active supporters of the anti-fascist cause. Through this call, the project will collect testimonies, photographs, historical documents and personal stories that document the role and contribution of European female resistance fighters. The material collected will be reworked by artists selected within the project, and turned into works of art, visual installations and multimedia production to be exhibited in public spaces.

Over 15 months, WONDER will unfold across 5 cultural organisations in Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland.  We will support 5 artists, one in each partner country, to carry out community-based archival research and develop new artistic work on women’s roles in European resistance movements that will be presented at each project venue.

WONDER connects 5 European cultural organisations: ECCOM, Centro Europeo per l’Organizzazione e il Management Culturale (IT, lead); Frauenmuseum Hittisau, FH (AU); Frauen in der Einen Welt Zentrum für Interkulturelle Frauenalltagsforschung und Internationalen Austausch e.V., FEW (DE); IAWM International Association of Womens’ Museum, IAWM (IT); Stichting Herengracht 401, H401 (NL); Fundacja Instytut Beatboxu, FIB (PL).

Behind the façade of Herengracht 401 lies the world of Gisèle d’Ailly van Waterschoot van der Gracht (1912–2013): artist, traveller and collector. In her living rooms and studio, art and everyday life come together. The Second World War forms a profound chapter in H401’s and Gisèle’s history. Gisèle sheltered people in hiding here. Their presence, and the significance of the protection she offered, remain part of the house. The history of the house also contains difficult aspects, which H401 investigated thoroughly and now addresses openly. Today, the house, and organisation, continue to evolve. Contemporary artists respond to its rooms, objects and stories, adding new perspectives and contributing to thematic year programmes, artist residencies and international cooperations.
