Exhibition, book and (online) events
October 2020 – March 2021
Since the #MeToo movement, the connection between masculinity and power has been closely monitored. The focus on ‘toxic masculinity’ influences our perception of male sexuality and significantly affects men’s self-image and self-esteem. Men are embarrassed by others and they feel embarrassed too. This programme explores and researches the representation of male shame, nudity, fatherhood, violence, rape, fascism and virility, men and war from both male and female perspectives. This programme presents contemporary works that address the complexity and contradictions of these socio-cultural constructions and realities and combines a scientific approach with the artistic perspective, personal stories, conversations and workshops.

Reflections of critical friends
Merapi Obermayer volgde de programma reeks SHAME! Exploring Masculinities.

In the framework of their 6 weeks module ‘Gender and sexuality’ students from IArts students Maastricht had a 2 hour class with curator Ernst van Alphen at H401. Four first year IArts students then developed the project “Courage in vulnerability”:
“This project is developed within the frame of the topic Gender and sexuality that we have been working on for several weeks. It is a multifaceted topic in whose core we see the striving for acceptance and normalization of individual identities uninfluenced by our society’s norms. We believe global change towards this reality starts with the individual. In this case the individual man. This project is very personal to us as we all feel, in our own way, connected to the topic. We come from different backgrounds and cultures and bring with us our own experiences and knowledge that sparked the need to take on this project.”- Zoé Berteloot, Tagwa Ali, Brian Waltmans and Milena Dahl.
